Q for Midwives - placentas

I'm a curious expectant mum, and have been doing some reading on the web, particularly about childbirth in Indonesia.

It seems that over there during the past 5-10 years placentas seem to be getting shorter with more cases of abnormal placentas and velamentous insertion.

Has this been the case in the UK also?

The founder of the Bumi Sehat Foundation believes there may be a link between the GM soy (which is the main source of protein for women) and the placental and cord abnormalities.

I was wondering if you've seen a similar occurance in the UK, where GMO soy isn't a main source of protein?

Can't say I've seen any research in the UK surrounding this. I haven't noticed a difference in cord lengths or the incidence of velamentous insertions or 2 cord vessels in the last 10 years.
