Do large for dates babies arrive earlier?

addie81 · 29/07/2010 12:19

Wishful thinking I suspect, but I am at least 2 weeks ahead for dates (both by measuring fundal height and growth scan), so I am wondering if this might mean that my baby will be cooked earlier, and therefore make her appearance a bit earlier? I wonder if any MNers who have also measured big for dates can tell me whether their babies arrived early/late/on time?
Many thanks!

Mine didn't! I went to 42+5 with my large for dates baby and he was an enormous 10 lb-er ion the end!

tattycoram · 29/07/2010 12:24

Mine didn't either, another 42 weeks and a 10 ib 11 baby. It might have been because he was OP though, so didnt engage properly

41+1 here for second baby 10lb 6oz, first born at time plus 2 at 9lb 15oz. Good luck!

LadySanders · 29/07/2010 12:30

42 weeks with mine... he was 9lb 6oz

Hi can I join your thread?

How many weeks are you addie? I'm also measuring approximate two weeks ahead and all scans midwives etc have said all along baby is big. This is my second preg, my first born was 8lb 3oz which I thought was fairly hefty anyway given I'm 5" 2' and was fairly petite.

Did you have to ask for a growth scan or did midwife suggest it? I'm tempted to ask for one but the only thing that is putting me off is the fact that I understand they are not very accurate. Also how would it help me except make worry! I also worry about tearing etc and wonder if this is more likely with a big baby? Are you nervous about this addie?

I

oh dear! It looks like it definitely was wishful thinking! So far it looks like the big ones are just as likely to stay put!
I am 30 weeks just now - not particularly worried about tearing (though obviously would much prefer not to!), just really looking forward to the baby arriving and not being pregnant anymore!

DS was born at 41+4 and was 10lb 8oz... ouch.
This baby is measuring 3 weeks ahead, and I'm very nervous about going through that agaain, it was pretty traumatic
I asked for a dating scan, which I'm having at 36 weeks, but I don't really see the point of it, tbh. Even if it shows another ten pounder, my consultant is of the opinion that because I delivered a big 'un once before, I can do it again... hmmn, wonder if she'd still think that if it was her trying to squeeze that out?!?

Margeaux · 29/07/2010 21:30

I was always big for dates (+2weeks) with DS.

He was finally born at 42+1 @9lb7lb

Spirael · 29/07/2010 22:30

You already know my story from the Frolicker thread.

I was measuring 1-2 weeks ahead for the whole pregnancy and DD arrived at 37+6 weeks, weighing 8lbs 3oz. So there is potentially some hope!

(Kinda glad she did come early... If she'd stayed put for another month she may have been huge! )

addie81 · 29/07/2010 22:56

thanks Spireal - you are giving me some hope!

not in my case ds1 measured large and had to be induced at 10 days over and he was 10lb 3 and ds2 was late but came of his own accord and weighed 9lb 11!

deemented · 29/07/2010 23:02

At 38 weeks with DS3, i was measuring 46 weeks

He was born at 39 weeks exactly and was 9lb 15 and a half oz.

At 38 weeks with DD i measured 44 weeks - she was 10lb 2oz born at 38+4.

So no, they didn't come early.

Haing said that, a friend had a boy at 37 weeks weighing 10lb 12oz!

JetSetWilly · 29/07/2010 23:26

Jeez Louise deemented what is it you do to them when you cook them! Imagine if your dd had been on time or late even

Seriously though what is it that makes babies larger or is a combination of factors? Genes /diet /mothers build /just one of those things??

AhickeyfromKenickie · 30/07/2010 10:38

In my case, I think it's genetics.
My Dad is only 5 foot 4 and he weighed 11lb at birth.
My sister is 5 foot nothing, weighed 9 stone at 9 months, and had a 10lb 5oz boy.
My nan says we just inherited her childbearing hips!
Having said that I have really watched my weight with this pregnancy, I have put on a stone so far (27 weeks) but I think that's mostly baby !!!
