Hello

First timer here.... and about 6 months off - but i'm just asking questions when I think of them.

How does it work, registering the birht. Do my husband and I need to show passport or birth certificates of our own?

Can we register at the hospital or do we need to go somewhere different?

We're both British, but live abroad with DH's job, so need to get a passport and then a visa sorted - so we'll need to get it registered ASAP.

Thanks in advnace for advice!
H

It will be your local registry office I would have thought.

I don't think you need to take any ID - I honestly cannot remember though.

We didn't take any ID and had no problems. We were given a document by the hospital to take with us but the registrar didn't seem to need it - she took it more as an after thought as I was waving it about.

I can't see that it would make a difference that you aren't habitually resident in the UK - I presume from the way the question is phrased that you will be in this country for the birth?

Yes, giving brith in Devon. I think I'm worrying a bit because we need to get it registered asap so we can get the passport forms off and then sort the visa. As much as I love my mum and dad, staying at their tiny place with a newborn and DH is not my idea of heaven!

We registered our DS last week and you don't need anything. We were given a sheet before leaving hospital with all the birth details on but we weren't asked for it when registering.

The main stumbling point you might come across is if you can't get an appt for a few weeks as they do get booked up a few weeks in advance. But, you can register at any office so worth ringing around as many as you can until you get one that can fit you in pronto.
