Induction booked for Thursday - given these conditions, what do you think my chances of starting naturally are?

40+12 today and have been monitored with a trace in the hospital this afternoon. Had a sweep at 40+5, followed by a show at 40+6. 4 hours of contractions Sunday night that finished as abruptly as they began.

I asked for a sweep from a midwife at the hospital who wrote the following in my notes:
Cervix mid-position, soft, admits one finger at external os interior as closed. Stretch and sweep not possible.

So I called my community midwife to ask to book a sweep tomorrow but there were no appointments so she said to come in today. She then gave me a sweep and wrote the following in my notes:
Head 3/5ths palpable - on VE cervix 2-3cm long. External cervix 2cm dilated, internal cervix 1cm dilated, forewater felt. Head -2spre(?) fixed in pelvis. Stretch and sweep performed.

So. What do I make of all that? I really don't want to be induced and have been vigorously bouncing on my birthing ball since the sweep. I've got an acupuncture appointment tomorrow morning, having a hot curry tonight, will try to twist DH's arm for a shag and will go for a long walk tomorrow.

What do you reckon my chances are? Really don't know where I stand given the current condition of my cervix. That's not a sentence I ever thought I'd write!

Well it sounds like there is some progression between your 2 sweeps.

I was induced with DD1. I had no sweeps previously due to some spurious concern about IUGR. On admission to hospital at 40 + 9 I was described as having a very unfavourable cervix, 6 hours later at 2nd examination it was still unfavourable and closed, she was born 5 hours later - so things can obviously change rapidly.

With DD2 I had a sweep on the Monday at 40 + 7 (unfavourable, closed) and labour started spontaneously on the Wed. She was born 4 hours later.

Take heart from having had some progression and try everything else that you can.

Asan aside my experience of induction was absolutely fine AND they can't force you to have an induction anyway.....but thats a whole different thread!

Wow, that's really encouraging! Thanks for that - I was feeling very despondent but you've cheered me up a lot. Must've felt like a miracle with your DD2

I know they can't force an induction. I have been resisting it but there were some questions over the trace I had today - basically there wasn't quite as much movement as they would normally expect - and as my DS1 was quite unwell when he was born (although at 40+4) in a way I'd rather get things moving than be worrying unnecessarily on into the weekend and beyond. Lesser of two evils I suppose

Do you happen to know what it means when midwife wrote 'forewater felt'? She said she could feel them bulging. Is that a good thing??
