If you have a c section, do you automatically get your own room?

I may have to have a c section as I had a bad tear with DS. The thought of having to stay on a ward again fills me with terror. It was one of the worse experiences of my life and I would rather have been stitched up in theatre again that go through that. Luckily the midwives realised and gave me my own room the second night.

I was talking to my friends last night and one of them said that if you have a c section, you automatically get your own room. My other friend who had a c section said she stayed on the ward, and I am sure when I was up there the midwives said that they keep you on the ward at least for the 1st night as its easier for them to deal with (I don't know why tbh).

Has anyone else heard of this?

I had a section and had my own room. All the section ladies did.

tbh I think they prefer to have you on the ward on the first night to keep an eye on you - basically they're looking after other women and they can see you.

I got a private room (requested before the birth but only as/when free) 2nd and 3rd nights after my last section.

no, ask your hospital, I was in a 4 bed recovery room till I was with it, then a 6 bed ward (mostly other CS mums)

re easier to deal with - they get to SEE you more, while passing to see the other women, so actually clap eyes on you more than if they are just looking into a room with closed door every X amt of mins, this means any unexpected deterioration potentially gets identified quicker. Thats not to say you don't get checked on in a side room, just that they SEE you inbetween checking you

Also, I've had my own room both times and although I did like having my own space I was pretty much totally ignored by the midwives etc and found picking up the baby/feeding etc a total nightmare. On balance for me it was still better on my own (especially 2nd time round) but worth thinking about.

Ah right, that makes sense now. I just found it so horrific that it makes me want to try for a natural birth, just to avoid staying in longer which sounds ridiclous I know. Pity home birth isn't an option.

It will depend on your local hospital. When I had ds2 I was on the ward for the first night and then in my own room for nights 2 and 3. With dd I was at a different hospital and was on main ward the whole time.

I'm in Kent, and had to pre-book and pay for a private room, which would only be available if no emergencies took precedent. After my horrible experience with ds2 I had to spend one night on the ward, in pain, and with a baby in SCBU while being gawped at by visitors to other people wondering why I had no baby on the post natal ward. So, I am v sceptical about them being available as a general policy to c-section patients.

2 c-sections here - on the ward both time. I think they keep the single rooms for those who have had a particularly traumatic birth or where the baby has suffered some sort of trauma.

A friend did get her own room with her first and she said she would stand at the window feeling overwhelmingly lonely watching the mums on the ward chatting with all the people that pass through. And she didn't get that much more sleep as her baby was checked hourly for the first two nights.

I got my own room the second night as I have M.E. and I just cannot cope with other noise. I didn't sleep or rest at all but sat up all night and the next day until 2 midwives came in and said I was getting my own room as I had to rest. If I could have I would have kissed their feet!!

I have also since found out that tinnitus (which I also have) makes you intolerant to other noise. It really does drive me up the wall and I want to cry with the thought of having to go on a ward again.

Certainly didn't in Luton, either time, elected or emergency. Did have some time in room on own before DD1, in delivery suite, hooked up to monitors all night, DH sent home. Was scariest few hours of my life, mw's did check on me, but were obviously v busy elsewhere...

Having said that, only spent two nights in with DD2, even tho c section, so was bearable (just). Headphones useful...wish someone had told that to woman in next bed...

2 emcs for me. The first time I was on the ward (good thing too, as no help came when I was puking violently and rang the buzzer, until one of the other women yelled for a MW).
The second time I was put into a private room on the first night, having spent the entire day (since 7am) on the ward. They said I could have a private room because my catheter was out and I was able to walk. In fact I ended up being re-catheterised but kept my room because they couldn't be bothered moving me again!

You can, of course, self-discharge quickly after a CS. My friend stayed just the one night and went home with the 2 grannies to take care of her kids. My BP misbehaves badly after I give birth but otherwise I had an IM who was prepared to take me home after 1 night and look after me there, which I think would have been better.

it must depend on the hospital, surely? i got my own room, presumably because the way the wards were laid out it put me closest to the nurses' station. all the rooms were round there, the wards down the corridor. so if your friend gave birth at the same hosp, i'd say you're alright.

I wish someone had told the woman in the next bed to me that 4-5am is NOT an appropriate time to phone your DH and when you are not actually watching tv, to please turn it off so the adverts are not flickering all sodding night, even though both sets of curtains were closed, I could still see the flickering bloody tv!!! Grrrr.

Depends on the hospital. With both my CS had to spend the frst night on the C section ward with all the other sections.

I had a private room for my ELCS. I requested it and planned to pay for it but they let us have it for free in the end as the ward was full.

At my hospital all the CS mums were in a ward of 6 with other higher risk mums (like me as I had a dreadful forceps birth).

I had a private room after my section, but only because we asked for one. We paid I think £50 per night.

I think they try and give women who've had a section priority at our hospital, but there are only 3 private rooms so it's not possible for everyone to have one.

Was on the ward after both of mine. I think it probably depends on the hosp. In some you can pay for a private room.

Had cs twice and was on the ward for both. Had a third degree tear for the other dc and was on the ward for that too, that was the worst by far!

No of course not. Whether you get your own room depends on your hospital, what type of accommodation they have, what their policy is for allocating the single rooms that they have, and most importantly - how busy they are when you give birth.

Depends entirely on the hospital. At mine the single rooms are reserved for those who have the most reason for one. I had had a section, had twins, and then the twins were taken away to neonatal cause they were poorly. And I still was on the ward with all the other ladies - which was really tough as I didn't have mine
But at least on the ward you can grab a midwife as they rush past. I've heard that in the single rooms you are ignored for hours on end.

ds3's did it well (had 3 sections, 2 different hospitals). Ward for 24 hours - next to the midwives station so they can check on you regularly and remember your painkillers (unlike hospital #1 ) then we were all moved into single rooms.

I asked specifically for a private ward before my ELCS, and was told there were no private rooms offered at my hospital. Naff.
