Homebirth - where should I keep the Pethidine? Fridge?

Hello everyone,

I am 38 weeks pregnant with my first child and have booked a homebirth, with the full support of the fabulous community midwives from the Homerton Hospital (Hackney, London). Am hoping my pregnancy continues to be as straightforward as it has been up until now, touch wood! My birthing pool is going up tomorrow and I'm looking forward to using it over the next few weeks for bobbing about in! Am determined to get value for money out of it!!

Anyway, I have pethidine in the house which I hope not to use. I got it on the basis that if I have it I won't need it, but if I don't I will - perverse! On the same basis I have a fully packed labour bag for hospital on the basis that I won't need it if I've prepared it...

But where should I keep it? I'm sure I read it should be in the fridge - but there is nothing on the box to say so.

Also, should a midwife happen to read this, the chemist has spelt my surname incorrectly on the label. I think, theoretically, the midwife is responsible for checking that the details match. Is this going to be an issue?

Thx for your help - great forum, have spent a long time reading through all the homebirth/waterbirth posts.

found this on net if it helps:
STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS:
Store below 25°C.
Keep out of reach of children.
Protect from light.

also, not in bathroom or near a sink as heat and dampness may damage medicine

Many thanks! Sounds like fridge not necessary, just somewhere reasonable cool (and not damp)!

thanks for your help - x

no probs, hopes it all goes well.

spudballoo - spelling of name on box will not be a problem. Midwife will only need to check drug and dosage and that you want it! As you have fouind out already no need to store in frideg. Good luck for your homebirth

Thanks Mears...I was hoping you might pop in for the 'professional' view! x
