Has anyone else had a particularly nasty case of cystitis or kidney infection after catherterisation?

I told hospital I was weeing blood the day after op, and they refused to believe me as how could I tell it wasn't just lochia (er, different hole?!).

I have been given antibiotics, but am still weeing blood and am getting a tad concerned as I also have dreadful back ache - again, this has been dismissed as postural/muscular.

i'm not looking for kidney horror stories, thanks - had one of those myself few yars ago, hence my worry. I just wondered how common it was?

It did sting both when they put the catheter in and took it out again.
many thanks!

It is very common to get a urine infection after having a catheter in for any reason.

The bladder is usually one way - it urine is produced and flows out. By introducing a tube from the outside world, to inside your bladder, there is a path for bacteria to get in.

Hopefully you are on trimethoprim? And hopefully they sent a urine sample to the lab? It will normally to straightforward to treat.

But if you are still getting low back pain and or fever after 48 hrs on the antibiotics I would go back to the GP.

UTI infections are very common after catheterisation.

Though having tubes stuffed up there can make it very sore and stingy and often there's a bleed after. But you sound like it was removed a while ago?

I think once the anti-b's have been taken get back to the Dr with a wee sample. Apart from blood there's often protein in wee if there is an infection.

Drink lemon barley water to flush the waterworks out.

Thank you! My worry is compounded by the fact that I am taking co-aximol or something - an antibiotic that is used for UTIs and kidney infections, but have been taking it for three days with no real improvement. The hospital did send off a sample, but I was discharged before the results came back - I'll phone for them tomorrow.
Will get lemon barley and keep drinking lots of water.
The catheter was removed on wednesday. Bleeding started on thursday night. Will go back to doc again tomorrow - honestly, this birth has resulted in all sorts of random medical ailments!

Co amoxiclav?

yy, after three days and not feeling better I would take another sample in, it may be that you need a different antibiotic (the particular bacteria you have got may not be sensitive to the abx you are on)

The lab result will show which bacteria, and which antibiotics are suitable, so they can change them if neccessary. hth.
