How to teach Boundaries

DD7 is experiencing friendship issues. I want to teach her about boundaries, what’s acceptable and not and how to use her voice and have the confidence to say no, and push back if she isn’t happy.

She is aware of what’s right and wrong, but is worried about saying no/ upsetting people and getting into trouble.

is anyone able to give advice please? Have you been in this situation?

Social stories? Get her to talk through various scenarios with you and practice what she would say.

At 7, I’d probably practise boundaries through everyday situations rather than making it feel like a big lesson. Role-playing little scenarios can help, like practising what she could say if a friend wants her to do something she doesn’t want to do. It’s also worth reminding her that saying no isn’t rude and she isn’t responsible for keeping everyone happy.

Teach your child about their feelings, and also about boundaries. If they do not feel good with someone, they should know that no one can force them to be with that person. Children must know from an early age what's right and what's wrong and that knowledge would help them choose between all the options.
