Advice needed for 11-year-old struggling with emetophobia and starting secondary school

Hiya! I’m new here and I’m desperately after some advice with regards to my Sons emetophobia. My Son is 11 years old and following a sick bug back in May developed emetophobia. He was in his final few months of primary school and although his emetophobia was making things hard with the support of the school we muddled through. Upon finishing school in July he completed spiralled, we had a few weeks of him eating very little and quite frankly he was a nervous wreck from the moment he woke until the time he went to bed. I did try and get some help from the doctors at the time but they said things would need to be pretty severe for CAHMS to accept him and I was sent away. At that point I was at a complete loss so I found a local private therapist, she has been really good and my Son has been working through CBT therapy with her and I have to say things did improve, he was far from being completely fixed but we were managing okay. In September he then started his new secondary school and has not coped well at all ☹️ He’s been coming home so distraught and I’m so scared that if I keep pushing him to go I’m going to send him backwards! I have a meeting planned with the school for later in the week and another doctors appointment booked too. I have joined a few Emetophobia support groups and it seems the the gold standard treatment for beating this is ERP therapy along with anti anxiety meds. I have so many things running through my head and I just don’t know where to go from here. If I keep sending him to school am I going to break him completely? Should I maybe try for a reduced timetable or should I completely remove him? I can’t cope with pressure from school, I don’t want fines landing on my door step or constant snotty letters, this is all affecting my mental health too! What if CAHMS don’t accept him? I’m happy to pay for the treatment he needs but I’m struggling to find someone who can provide the right combination of therapy? Should I attempt the ERP therapy with him myself? Does anyone have any experience of CAHMS, if he gets accepted how long are we likely to wait? I really am at a complete loss and I just want my little boy back to being his happy cheerful self 😥 He’s always loved school so to see him not wanting to go breaks my heart 💔 If anyone can share any experiences of this, give me any kind of hope that all of this is going to be okay and give me any advice on what I should do I would be very very grateful 🥰 Thanks so much 🙏

A lot of CAMHS will just suggest you buy the Cathy Cresswell book, Helping your child with fears and worries. She might have a new one out with a slightly different name, but that's often the first thing.

Schools should also support, so maybe make contact with the MHST lead in school who should be able to organise the CBT through/in school.

Thank you both for your replies. I will definitely have a look into the book. I have a meeting at school this week so I’ll see what I can find out with regards to him having extra help/support in school. Thank you also for the self help link, I’m going to sit and have a look at this now ☺️
