DS currently attends a very good state school located in a neighbourhood which is not close to our home. We chose that school because it was academically good, had lots of green space and a forest, and a great ethos.
Reception year went okay.
Y1 was awful. DS started misbehaving at home and school, lost weight, could not sleep at night, developed school refusal (desperate crying in the morning), had anger outbursts.
Holidays were great. His personality changed drastically for the better. Played nicely with all kids and grandparents, was polite with everyone, slept and ate well, but had the occasional anxiety moment about going back to school.
During the last week, mainly during walks or mealtime, he managed to share with us two things
- His teacher last year screamed at him a lot and grabbed him by the arm a lot
- At playtime he is mostly alone
I feel.... horrible. I thought I had chosen the right school, but it seems my son was profoundly unhappy this year and I did not realise it.
He will have a new teacher this year. I am thinking to wait and see how things go, but if I observe the same patterns as last year, I will consider changing schools.
Thoughts?
(Please be kind, we are all tryin' here)
