Should CAMHS discharge your child if you move out of area?

Or if you move, should they make a referral to your new home area’s CAMHS?
Old area CAMHS have said they have discharged my DC due to move, and are saying we need to start again to self refer DC to CAMHS in the new area.
Given waiting times everywhere this risks losing continuity of care for next 12+ months..
Is CAMHS right about this?

From my experience they use any tactic they can to discharge clients.

I used to work in a mental health field, not CAHMS.
If people already involved with services moved into our area they were referred to us by their new GP. They then went through our normal triage to decide if they were routine or urgent and put on appropriate waiting list.

Thank you. The original GP from our old area advised us to stick with them rather than go to a new GP in new area, to keep a link with CAMHS in old area because current prescriptions are relying on it.

Seems like one of those chicken and egg things. And now we’ve been discharged from CAMHS with no plan to refer or take over prescribing.

I guess I could try to appeal the discharge somehow and ask for old area CAMHS to make a referral to new area CAMHS? and also ask the old area GP to make a referral to the new area CAMHS again? Then change GP to new GP…

Each professional I’ve asked had told me it’s for a different organisation to do this referral. People must move areas all the time though, it just seems a bit unlikely that there’s not any agreed route.

generally the GP makes the referral to their area.
if you move yes, you need to start again.
they may put you higher up the list but most places are stretched and would not keep people not in their area.

Ideally cahms write to new area but yes you will be discharged
