Tips for managing( or outright ban?) iPad /tablet for 5 year old

Our 5 year old boy just got given a tablet Fire (like iPad thing) by his school. He’s in reception. Of course it’s very generous but I almost wish it hadn’t happened or he didn’t know.
has anyone got any tips of how to manage ? Or would people even consider not giving g it to him?
I don’t really want every day to turn into a battle of how much time he can have on it. Especially over Xmas.
How much do they really need it in reception?

could using it slow down his learning to write ?

Easy. It is only for work set by the school, for nothing else.

What has he been given it for? I would have resisted being given one.

school work only on it. Not used without supervision.

I feel a bit stupid for not having pre-thought about it yea . Would have been easier not to have but they all get given one
