DS is 5 and is showing lots of signs of anxiety. He worries about everything, is an intense people pleaser, a perfectionist and overall very sensitive.

Some children at school have begun to tease him for crying a lot because he’s very easily upset. A particular issue we’re struggling with is that he’s terrified of heavy rain because he thinks everywhere will flood, despite constant reassurances from us that it’s never flooded nearby and it won’t happen. Given we’re now heading into autumn and winter he’s going to have to deal with rain and he cries about it which won’t fly at school and will only make him an easier target for others.

I’m an anxious person but I’ve always done my very best not to project on to him and I’m feeling huge guilt that he’s “got it from me”.

Does anyone have any tips on how to help with his worries and anxiety?

Thanks.

Speak to school. Express your concerns and find out from the teachers if they have similar concerns.

His anxiety is quite extreme and does suggest some underlying issues. It's not possibly to inherit anxiety - it's only a symptom - but neurodivergence is inherited, and very often is the trigger for lots of anxiety.
