Counselling for parents of ND children

My 9 year old with ASD (& potentially ADHD) is making life very hard at home. We’ve had a very difficult Christmas after a very difficult Autumn term and summer holidays before that.

I am keen to explore counselling for myself to help me cope and build my resilience which is at an all time low. I want to be able to help and support my ND child as best as I can and be in a better frame of mind/more present for his siblings.

Does anyone know what kind of counsellor / therapist would be most appropriate? I want someone who can listen and recommend strategies to keep me positive and not let his behaviour totally consume me.

Thank you & happy new year

I can recommend someone in the NW. Apart from that are there any counselling 'triage' services near you where you can go for an initial consultation and they'd refer you on to a suitable therapist?

The NAS website has a list of therapists. You can also search on Psychology Today and the Counselling Directory using search terms like ‘autism’ ‘adhd’ ‘parenting’ ‘carers’. Choose someone who is registered / accredited with a professional body and make sure they really know their stuff about neurodiversity (preferably with some personal experience if they are willing to disclose this).

Hi @Keeponmovin123 just wondering if you had any luck with finding some support. My son has just been diagnosed with ADHD and ASD. He expresses himself with swearing and now starting to get physical. I have no idea what I'm doing.

I did some therapy with a psychotherapist. She called it 'parent work'. I found it incredibly helpful.
