Ds is 11 and started high school in September. He got a phone for Christmas. I have just had a look through it and I'm shocked at what I have found - videos from tic tok saved to camera roll about self harming, how they wish they weren't born, hating life, videos of him crying.
He is generally a happy lad, does activities outside of school.
I'm so upset and have no idea how to approach this. He is asleep now but I feel so upset I had no idea

I'm so sorry, I'd delete tiktok for a start its really not child friendly it puts lots of ideas in young impressionable children's head. Self harming, saying they are depresses if they feel down, suicide etc. You will need to talk to him in whatever way you feel he will be most responsive, if its in the car together or sitting in the lounge relaxed with a film on. Just ask him if he is okay and does he want to chat about anything getting him down as you are his mum and there to help him and a problem shared is a problem halved and go from there. He can come back from this. My 17 year old had a tough time when young and self harmed and she has bulimia and bad anxiety and has grown out it all. Good luck

And also dont disregard how powerful the hormones can be going through puberty and how down they can make them feel. His life could be amazing then once they kick in it can make them struggle. Check he is okay at school, maybe speak to his year head/guidance teacher to see how he is doing academically and socially etc. Communication with him and any other adults in his life is important now.
