ADHD medication for 13 yo - how to access?

My 13 yo was diagnosed with ADHD by a clinical psychologist recommended by his school, using the usual Conners questionnaire/interviews with us/him/his teachers etc. We went down the private route as the NHS wait in our area is literally years.

We have now decided that we would like to look into medication for him, which the psychologist can’t prescribe. One private psychiatrist practice have said that he needs to be diagnosed by a psychiatrist (ie not a psychologist), so we need to start again basically.

I am waiting to hear back from the GP as to whether they are prepared to prescribe on the basis of the psychologist’s assessment. In the meantime, does anyone know anything about how this process usually works? We really had to stretch ourselves for the original assessment so would like to avoid unnecessary duplication (while obviously making sure any medication is suitable/appropriate for him).

Hi, I used a psychologist for adhd diagnosis for my child. You're right that they cannot prescribe. However, the one I used had links with a non medical prescriber. He works as a nurse for camhs but also does private work. Cost me about £200 to get a script and then was able to get it transferred over to my GP prescribing. Could you go back to the psychologist and ask if they know anyone who prescribes that they could give you the details of?

Sorry @lollipopss - I rather lost track of this but that is exactly what we’re going to do. Interested to know if anyone else has had a similar experience?
