12 yo isolating himself

Our 12 yo son has always been very gregarious, with plenty of friends and activities. Since lockdown in March, he's totally withdrawn. Doesn't want to resume his football training (which restarted this week), doesn't want to meet or engage with (or even talk to) his friends, or do any other activities that are now beginning to resume. He would spend 24/7 playing games on his phone if allowed.

We've thought of confiscating his phone but I fear this would just fuel his resentment. He clams up when we try to talk to him. When his teacher tried to speak to him in a catch-up call, he refused to take part.

I don't know if this is just typical teenage mood swings (compounded by the disruption of lockdown) or a more serious mental health concern. His brother has had a major operation and I've had health issues, so I understand it must be a confusing and unsettling environment for him right now.

We're struggling to know how to address this. Is anyone else going through (or has had) a similar experience?
