Had DS first school parents evening last night, the teacher said he has settled well, has lots of friends and can play happily in groups or alone, all good. Then she mentioned that he won’t make eye contact with teachers and some of the children, and also that he struggles to stay focused when they’re all sitting on the carpet and they have to ask him to do things quite a few times sometimes. My initial thought was that boys will be boys in terms of concentrating, and the eye contact as just shyness, but last night in bed it was playing on my mind and I googled eye contact and it cam up with ODD disorder which DS does has some traits for and now I am really worried. He makes eye contact with family members no problem and I’ve seen him make eye contact with his friends, but if a child he doesn’t know very well or a an adult outside the family speak to him he may say hello but will do so with his head down or look off to the side. This morning when his teacher said hello, he just plain blanked her. He also does this thing when he is nervous he will lick mine or my husbands arm, it’s very strange, like he doesn’t know what to do with himself. His behaviour at home is challenging, he doesn’t like being laughed at (his older sister is 6 and sometimes if he gets something wrong or falls over she will giggle or tease) and his reaction to that is normally to lash out physically. Having said that he has always hit all his milestones and his teacher said his number work is good at school and he can also sound out and blend letters to read simple words. I’m just so worried there’s something wrong now.
