Anxiety in 5 year old

Does anyone have any advice on how I can help my son with his confidence? He is 5 years old and the most lovely boy but he gets so anxious and I feel it is holding him back. He was finally very settled at school before the holidays but since returning has gone back to crying and clinging to me at the school doors, refusing to go in. He gets invited to parties and won't leave my side. He is too scared to take part in clubs etc unless I am there. I went to watch him in his school nativity and he spent the whole time crying on the teacher's lap. He also sometimes comes across so rude because people say hello and he just goes mute and doesn't even acknowledge them. He had no special educational needs or anything but is just so shy and anxious about the smallest of things. He has been at nursery since the age of 9 months and we have always encouraged social interaction. I don't how to help him.
