Does anyone have any experience of Sensory Processing Disorder

I'm looking for a bit of advice from anyone with some knowledge of sensory processing disorder.

I have a little boy who is nearly 6 and for a long time I have thought but tried to deny that he may have some sort of sensory disorder and looking to see if these characteristics fit.

These are the main things that make me think there may be something:

He screams the house down when I try to cut either his finger or toenails.
He cannot tolerate tags on clothes and clothes that are not very soft material.
He is very very easily distracted to the point where he has to sit at a table on his own at school.
He is terrified of the noise that handdryers make.
He cannot sit still for any period of time and always on the go.
He has no sense of fear and never sees anything as dangerous.
He likes extreme volume on to or tablet.
He is either one way or the other with affection. One day he can be full of hugs and kisses but others he will not let you near him although he is extremely affectionate with his little sister to the point where he will not leave her alone (hugging, kissing etc).
He hates to have socks on as they're touching his feet, you cannot go near his feet for him screaming.
He always repeats random noises for 5-10 minutes at a time, normally loud noises.
I don't know if this is related or not but he often poos in his pants.

I know all of these things suggest a boisterous little 6 year old but I feel there is just something.

Hi my dd is nearly six and has asd and sensory processing disorder. She does a lot of the things your ds does. What is it you would like to know?

You have just summed up my ds1 who's almost 10. He also soils himself often. Apparantly our OT said they don't diagnose 'sensory processing disorder' they call it sensory sensitivities but it's basically the same thing.

Not really sure what I need to do next, are these typical characteristics of sensory disorder? What do I need to do next, is it worth visiting the gp or is it something that I can work on at home? What can I do to help him? He is also a middle child and sometimes I feel that his behaviour is just attention seeking but then other times I think not. I really don't know what to do next.

I'm pretty sure there is a sensory support thread in SN. Have a look, a lot of us have dc with sensory processing disorder. Very common in children with ASD.

Sorry, forgot to mention I don't this this is usual for a 6yo. And your gp would be a good place to start. Good luck!

I don't know where you are but when my little one was given ADHD diagnosis and placed on ASD pathway we were given a list of groups to contact. One of these groups offered training in SPD. It really was an eye opener.
Try and find if there are any groups in your area. Community pead should be able to help.
Our group provides equipment for you to try to help your child cope better.
All the things you have said are exactly what my child lives with.

I'm also in Liverpool and did training with a brilliant group who also have a Facebook page if you want to take a look? We had a private occupational therapy report done as nhs didn't offer it. We are now trying to find a therapist who can offer private therapy as the nhs ots aren't trained in sensory integration. First port of call would probably be your gp ours was bloody useless tbh if you have a children's centre nearby ask if they have a disability link worker as they can point you in the right direction for help. And also if your ds has a senco at school they should be able to help
