Any advise wud be helpful my 11 year old is so unhappy at school ...she is dyslexic and has the same with numbers so maths and English is a nitemare ....maths in particular is totally stressing her out we have only been at the school for 4 months and its not great ....they are under pressure to get results but they keep giving her maths test and gets like 1 out of 20 its so deflating for her ...she gets so worried and so anxious I've spoke to the teachers who bear in mind they keep changing ....what shud be my next move ???

I tell my dd that the SATs is not a measure of her, but of how well the teachers are doing. This seems to help.

What provision is made for your daughter re her dyslexia? If speaking to the teachers is not helping, you should make an appointment to see the SENCO.

If she is getting 1 out of 20 then the sats are not appropriate for her. She should be given a teacher assessment and then supported to make progress at her level, not forced to endure tests that are clearly too difficult. This is unacceptable as she is not being taught at her level to help her progress from where she is and it must be so damaging for her self esteem. Make an appointment with the school and talk to them about your concerns. As a teacher I always have a few children who do not sit the sats. They sit other papers at their level so they do not feel different but all progress is celebrated whether it is level 4 or not.

I'm coming to this a bit late in the day, but are the "scoring one out of twenty" tests by any chance the mental maths tests? These are done with a CD reading out the questions and a fixed time to answer each question (in practice tests the teacher often reads out the questions).

Lots of dc find them stressful and I believe teachers like to do these tests regularly in order to get the pupils "used" to doing them. The trouble is mental maths questions come over very definitely as a test. Questions from past test papers may also be used for the rest of the lesson but may not be obviously "test like" as the teacher will pick one type of question to look at e.g. word problems or rotating shapes. So it seems like an ordinary lesson iyswim. You need to find out if dd is coping better with these sorts of questions. The mental maths isn't the main part of the test but can seem the most threatening.
