Chicken keepers

Meet others keeping chickens on our Mumsnet Chicken forum.

I've caved in and put the chickens in the (heated) shed!

Only got two Silkies and it's very, very cold. Temps. expected to go down to minus 7 tonight & tomorrow. So I chucked some straw in to the cat carrier and bought them into the shed.

Anyone else as soft as me?

Moved my eglu down to the corner between the house and the dog kennel, so fairly sheltered wind wise but I do worry-their little house is all covered in snow right now

How many girls have you got in there Gloom? I've got a Cube, so 2 silkies were not going to produce enough warmth to keep cosy!

well I got 2 a ginger and a black one-not sure what she is as they are both rescue chicks, had them 2 years now.

Our she is right at the end of the garden tho and full off crap! the eglu is quite small really, I put lots of extra straw in for the today and woodchip lined the droppings tray so they should be ok.

Well three of them producing their own body heat in a small Eglu should be fine. Extra straw and a move to a more sheltered spot will work wonders I think.

I need to down-grade to an Eglu but can't be arsed taking the Cube apart to get it back out of the walk-in run. Wish I'd bought the Eglu now though. That'll learn me!

well, I shut their pop-hole tonight. First time since the last snow in Jan/Fe I think.

Our chickens have had to cope with a fox frightening them through the eglu run, and a cold snap. When the fox came, Scarlett and Ginny were totally freaked out and attacked each other, which is out of character for them. They even drew blood, which we treated .

They really did not need the freezing weather, and for the past few days we have been very worried about them. They have even been off their food. Thankfully, today they have been devouring their treats and are still laying, so hopefully all is well. We introduced them to our new pup today, and Scarlett was not bothered in the slightest. She is a tough chook
