Rats are evil.

Poor Lulu, my clucky mama hen and her three chicks were attacked by a rat last night, one chick has died .

Lulu and other three seem ok this morning.

Was watching Bruce Willis hostage film which was just getting tense when realised I could hear the chicks, then Lulu going ballsiitic and lots of thudding (she is in the ark in back garden). I screamed (poor DH, he was asleep) and legged it outside shouting, thought it was a fox, whole ark rocking and two chicks in the flower bed. Opened back door of ark Lulu jumped out then a big rat shot past my feet.

Lulu gathered chicks, DH arrived with torch and when I moved the nest box for a head count found third chick badly bitten and dead.

Really upsetting. Rat proofed ark with bricks and a fire guard but am going to add some extra netting today.

yes i did the flour trick with ours, its very good
and well done woman!

You sawed your own arm? Didn't you have any bits of scrap wood to use? So have you nailed your arm across the ark and posed your hand into a suitable two-fingered gesture to ward off any further rat visits? It sounds extreme but it might just work...

My electric hen has arrived. Her legs are a bit wobbly but I think she'll do.

tortoiseSHELL · 06/05/2008 20:54

How are the other chicks today?

MehgaLegs · 07/05/2008 16:58

Electric hen sounds good. Didn't quite manage to saw whole arm off but I tried.

I impressed myself still further by making a new, tightly fitting slidey door for the pop hole in the ark, used power tools and everything.

tortoise - the other chicks appear unscathed although it did take awhile to persuade Lulu to take them to bed last night. She'd got herself all cosy by the dustbin shed (could you get more ratty??) and had to be gentley shoved in direction of ark.

Forgot to do flour.

I am very impressed at the new doors. My woodworking skills are pants!

I am fuming!! It is a beautiful day and dh has taken all the children into town so I have peace and should be outside BUT what do I see running all over the place in broad daylight but loads of rats.
Some layers pellets spilled and they are eating them. I cannot even shoot them as we are out of ammo.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/05/2008 14:31

Can you borrow a Jack Russell?

Or better still, do you have a pressure hose? [evil grin]

GentleOtter · 10/05/2008 16:27

Well I am refusing to go out full stop now as there is thunder and lightning PLUS it is pouring rain
Well OUR summer lasted oh all of two days.

And yes now that you mention it we DO have a power washer - really powerful for the tractor - grins back evilly like this but with fangs.

MehgaLegs · 12/05/2008 12:33

Oooh yes, get them with the hose.

Since our rat attack last week I 've not seen any about. Noticed yesterday that on e of Lulu's other chicks has a gash (now healed) on the back of its neck. Looks like it had a near miss with rat too.

Can you please all send the Bravery Fairy this way as I have discovered a new rats nest in the broken remains of the polytunnel and today I am going to Do Something About It.
I will have to pull the old polythene away, dismantle the hoops and rake the old straw from whence they nest.

MehgaLegs · 13/05/2008 10:31

Ugh I don't envy you that job. Wear big boots and tuck your trousers in your socks.

and get power hose out for good measure.
