Buying your kids first car

Hi, This is my first post, Just asking, does anyone have any clue what to look and listen for and how to do it properly when viewing a used car for my 18 year old? there are so many horror stories out there that I just dont wanna get it wrong.

We took dhs best mate with us when we got cars for the dc, we looked at a few first on our own and then he came with us to help us narrow it down. he’s a mechanic!
Otherwise we’d not have had much of a clue tbh.

Maybe a ford fiesta/mini cooper/Toyota yaris/Nissan micra?

We got a Skoda Citigo for DS. Small engine, so cheap insurance (especially with a black box) and economic to run. It was 9 years old when we bought it, he's had it for nearly 4 years and loves it!
