Negotiating on car price?

Is negotiating on the price of cars the "done thing"?

I'm looking at buying a second hand VW from an approved dealer. I've only owned one car before which I bought from Cazoo so no negotiating permitted. Should I negotiate? I would find it horrendously awkward but don't want to be taken for a ride (pun intended).

Also, can I pay in lots of different ways? E.g. half on credit card and half on debit?

TIA!

When i got.mone via a dealership i read on a forum no point negotiating on price at a dealership for my brand of car they rarely give money off. I negotiated for extras such as fix all the scratches, car mats etc. I took out the finance cos it came with a deal where I got 2yrs of mot and services for free and then paid the finance off after 2 days so paid only £11 in interest but got to keep the free mots and services.

Thanks. Which car forum did you use? Hadn't thought of using finance like that.

Oh I was buying a Skoda so was on the skoda forums.

Yeah the car finance can be good if they throw in incentives. You have 14 days to cancel but obviously you just pay it off and pay interest on the days you had it. Some might charge an early payment fee or you have to one month so just ask casually without letting them know that's your plan so you know what your signing up for and read the terms.

They also tried to get me to buy those extra instances like alloy wheel protection but you can get those cheaper yourself after if you really want them. So avoid.

Mt 2yrs are up now, will sure miss those free services as they changed the oil, any filters, always gave it a free clean etc. Always sent me a video walking me through their checks. The service was worth £300 per service plus £55 for mot per yr so for the £11 interest I paid i got a great deal.

Good luck!
