I work 12 contracted hours which is under the earning limit to receive career allowance normally. However occasionally such as December I work overtime (working up to 20 hours a week) whilst partner is off work (holiday) and son is at school doubling my income. Can I still claim careers allowance on the months I would qualify or does the claim stop completely? I would be unable to do the overtime every month/ week due to caring and partner working full time.

so I would qualify 11/ 12 months but not for the last month.

Carers allowance is worked out weekly rather than monthly.

To calculate whether your ear infection are over the weekly limit, take a look at your payslip. Take the amount after tax and ni and deduct half of your pension contributions. Then multiply that by 12 and divide by 52 to check if it's over the weekly earnings limit of £151 (going up in April)

If there is a month where your earnings are over the limit you'd usually need to cancel your carers allowance then reclaim the next month

Half of your pension contributions are deducted when working out of your over the limit, as is the full amount of ni and tax.

Bearing that in mind, if you're still over the limit in the months you do overtime you could ask your employer about putting a bit more of the money into your pension
