Best carpet cleaner for my old dad's "spills"

My dad is 94 (and a half, he keeps reminding me, bless him). His mobility has deteriorated considerably, and so, whilst he can control his bladder reasonably well, he can't always get to the loo quickly enough, especially at night. He uses a urinal to wee into, which was fine, but he now occasionally spills urine out of it onto the carpet (arthritic hands). My brother (his carer) has been using a Rug Doctor spray to keep on top of it, and we're getting the Dr involved to help going forward, but the carpet stain and the increasing pong really need to be sorted out!

Looking for recommendations for a cheap but good, lightweight carpet shampooer or wet/dry cleaner thingy? I'd rather buy one than rent but have just discovered how many there are on the market!

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for product recommendations, we’ve recently updated our guide to the best carpet cleaners with lots of options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and editors. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I have a Bissell Spot clean machine which I use with their own brand Shampoo designed for pet related spills (we have no pets, just two young kids).

It’s been great and totally removed wee off the fabric sofa, vomit off the carpet and just general day-to-day dirt/stains. No leftover whiffs and it’s so satisfying seeing all the filth go into the dirty water bucket.

Swan do one around the £100 mark that seems to get good reviews, there's often 20% off codes too. Lynsey Queen of Clean on Instagram has a code quite frequently.

Maybe try a different style urinal too, my Grandpa favoured an old style fabric softener bottle!

@TerribleCustomerCervix and @mizzo

Thank you both! That's a good start :).

Poor old dad isn't loving life at the moment, as we've just lost mam. They'd been together 70 years, and together for 61. But like many of his generation, he's alternating tearfulness with being remarkably stoic. He actually got up on his sticks yesterday and addressed the congregation at her funeral with humour, warmth and happy memories :) I hope I'm like that at his age (but without the arthritis, incontinence and immobility, obvs)

@TheWSM
I've only just seen your reply. Your Dad sounds lovely and Thanks for you both, losing your Mam must be so hard but it sounds like you have her the perfect send off. I'm sure your a chip off the old block Smile

I can recommend both of these.

The shampoo is marketed for animals but is really good at removing odours.
