We are traveling to Australia with 9 month old. What sort of car seat do I need and can I buy in the UK. I think from reading in requires a top tether. Recommendations for older children also appreciated.

You can't buy Australian regulation car seats in the UK. But apparently the car seats you get with hire cars in Aus tend to be decent, unlike other places where they can be old and in poor condition.

If you want your 9mo rear facing, make sure you specify this to the hire company. It's legal to forward face from 6mo in Australia, so you can't assume you'll get a RF seat. IIRC their measurements go by seated shoulder height, so if you can get your LO to sit against a wall and measure their shoulders, that would be the useful measurement to give.
