New car seat

Hi, just after some advice. I've just swapped my son to a more grown up car seat but I'm not convinced it's right for him. He is 2.5 but weighs 17kg so weight wise he is spot on for the new seat (it's 15kg +) but the age on it is 3.5.
It's isofix so doesn't move about, but it uses the main seatbelt. Just not feeling settled about it. Do we think I should get one with straps?
Thanks in advance.

Yes definitely you need a harness for a 2.5YO. For a high backed booster they need to be at least 3 years old, 15kg and 100cm tall. But personally I’d keep them harnessed longer so long as they still fit e.g. the seat we had that age could be used harnessed up to 105cm and the booster from 100cm so whilst he was still in that range we kept him harnessed.

Has he actually exceeded the weight limit for his old seat or could you keep him in it for a bit longer?

Hi OP,
It sounds like you have a high back booster seat for your son, but at 2.5, he’s really too young. The minimum requirements would be 3 years, 15kg and 100cm, but even then, that’s pretty young. He’d be much safer waiting to move into a seat like that when he was ideally 5, and 18kg and 110cm. He needs to be mature enough not to play with the seat belt too.
What seat did you have him in previously?

Yes I'd get him one with straps. Can you put him back in the old one for now? At 17kg, he'll still be within the limit for most seats of the previous type.

Do you know how tall he is? Halfords still sell the Cozy n Safe Hudson which has a 5 point harness up to 25kg without height limit. It's not too expensive, it does need to be fitted with isofix, seatbelt and top tether.

Or there are some rear facing seats if you prefer the extra safety of rear facing. They go up to 125cm and either 25kg or 36kg depending on the seat.
