Insurance question - car seats

Does anyone have any experience in car seat replacements via insurance?
My little boy had a graco turn2me seat in my mums car that needs replacing following an accident. They’ve asked for proof of purchase which I have… however I got it really cheap, mispriced even. Does anyone know if they will give you what you paid or the market value??

There's a couple of issues I can see. If the car seat didn't belong to your mum, there may be no cover at all for it, or very limited cover for items belonging to people other than the policyholder. She will need to check her insurance policy first to see whether a claim can be made for it, and if any limit applies.

Recently my husbands car was written off and I sent proof of purchase and they just reimbursed me £300 which was the limit on the policy

Thanks ☺️ it’s definitely covered they’ve already confirmed that, I just simply purchased my son a seat for when my mum had him - it’s never been removed from her car since purchasing it.
im just questioning re replacing it and what they go off as I am not 100% sure

Was your receipt for 300+ or less?

im just worried we are going to be out of pocket as we wouldn’t be able to buy the same seat now as what I paid for it if they give the value of what I paid :(

I was asked to send a picture of the car seat, along with a screenshot of the cost to replace, they sent me the amount to replace it - they should do the same for you, you shouldn't be out of pocket.

Including delivery charge.

I had the same, tho had to fight to get a true replacement IE blue not black (which was cheapest option!)

I sent them pictures of the car seats and the packaging which I still had, they also asked where I bought it and a link if I could find it.
We had bought both from Halfords so sent them the pictures and link.
They transferred the total worth of both seats within 36 hours of our accident.

That's annoying. They didn't question mine. I sent the screenshot to order from John Lewis with delivery and they sent me the money. I was surprised as it was over a year since the initial claim (I didn't realise that it should be changed after a minor bump, it didn't click as baby wasn't in car)

shams05 · 02/07/2024 20:17

They shouldn't leave you out of pocket

AnnaBegins · 02/07/2024 20:33

I just had to evidence cost to replace. One was no longer made so they automatically upgraded it to the latest equivalent. If you're claiming on a third party's insurance they really shouldn't quibble.

ilikecrisps · 02/07/2024 20:36

Thanks all - fingers crossed they just give us the amount to replace it like for like 🤞🏻

I think they just want to know that you bought it new and not second hand. Send the receipt and a screenshot of the same seat for sale at current RRP, since that would be the cost of replacing it like for like.

A lot of insurance companies give Halford's vouchers, if you don't want this (because you want to buy a seat which isn't sold in Halfords for example) you can argue for cash instead.

daffodilandtulip · 02/07/2024 21:12

Mine told me to buy replacements and send the receipts and they transferred the money. They didn't even ask about the ones I had.

It was for less, we had two car seats on the receipt (one for each car) and they sent us the max £300 even though each seat was only 140
