When to remove newborn insert - Britax baby safe 5z2

As the title says really, is there an official rule of when you should stop using the newborn insert - is it height or size governed?

DH has just asked, even though LO is only 3 months old! Our previous car seat didn’t have an insert so we never thought of it… I can’t find any guidance but may be both baby brained and utterly consumed by having to sort a new buggy!

When they don't fit in it anymore

@idontlikealdi Quite! But Lo is tall and slim at the moment, so lots of room still at the sides, hence the wondering.

As per manual, it's recommended for use between 40-60cm body size. But in general as PP says, if the baby fits better with the insert, keep it in even if they are over 60cm.

They offer approx rule of thumb for moving up straps too - the lowest position is for 40-65cm, middle position 62-81cm, top position 77-85cm. The overlap will be because some babies carry their length in their body and some in their legs. Leg lenth is not so relevant to body size.

I would guess from this that if you've moved the straps up, don't use the insert any more, though it doesn't explicitly say this. The rule of thumb with rear facing seats is to keep using a setting until the baby's shoulders go past the next slot up. Then you want to move the straps up a slot (though this one doesn't have slots, it's the same principle. Try moving the straps up and seeing where the baby sits in relation to the straps. If the straps are above their shoulders, move them back down.

If you wanted to convert it to clothing sizes, with the relevant piece of clothing being vests, the smallest size (with insert) covers the first couple of sizes (newborn, up to 1 month), then smallest no insert is 0-3m, 3-6m, middle strap height covers 3-6m up to 9-12m, top strap height is 9-12m and 12-18m clothing.

3-4 months is a usual time to remove it.

@BertieBotts Thank you so much, I really appreciate the help.

I couldn’t find this in the online manual at all - probably my
own incompetence!

But I do miss the old, yellow pages thickness, Britax manuals; they seemed to cover everything and more in a sensible order. The last 3 Britax products we’ve bought have had the QR code manual and it’s not the same!

Gosh I’ve given Britax a lot of money over the years! Well their various retailers anyways!

Yes, I must admit, when I was reading it I thought - this isn't as clear as their older products. It's a shame because their manuals have always been very good.

Snug is good. There are various Facebook groups for car seat safety you can join which might give you an idea of what to look for.
