Hi my son is 8 & is over 135cm tall. Can he still be in a high back booster? Or a backless booster?

As long as he fits comfortably in it and is under the weight limit for the seat he can still use one. In lots of countries the children have to use booster seats up to 152cm.

Same here 8yo ds over the 135cm he stays in his high backed booster as must be safer than him not being in anything and he’s not bothered

Yes most HBB can go up to 150, and it’s still safer to keep them in the back booster as extra side impact. 9yo and 132cm here and staying in HBB as long as possible, though most of his friends aren’t in any car seat at all though Hmm

Yes he can :) It's much safer for him to be in a full high backed booster, because it will protect his head in the event of a crash. But he can use a backless booster as well.

Ideally don't move him out of one until a seatbelt fits him properly without - I find this is different in different cars but you're looking for:

  • Lap belt crosses hips/thighs, NOT over soft bit of tummy.
  • Can bend knees over edge of seat when bum is all the way to the back of the seat.
  • Shoulder belt crosses collarbone and doesn't rub neck.

Bear in mind if he doesn't reach the knee/bum back one, he will probably naturally scoot forwards so that he can bend his knees, and this brings him into a precarious position where the lap belt will be on his soft abdomen and the shoulder belt will rub him at the neck. This is highly dangerous in a crash.
