We have a Joie Bold in my car as I wanted the 5 point harness past 18kg weight and recently replaced our axkid minikid with a britax kiddifix 2 for husbands car. My mother in law picks our (tall) 5 year old up from school once a week and has to call into our workplaces to collect a seat. I'm thinking of buying a seat for her car to avoid this but don't want to spend a fortune. Does anyone have any recommendations for cheaper seats with a good safety reputation or am I asking for the moon on a stick?!

Joie Trillo is the one you want :) It got one of the best scores for safety recently but is one of the cheapest ones you can get. There is also LX and Plus versions which are even better, for a little bit more money. The website should tell you what the difference is.
