Low back booster only available in taxi-Help!

Hi
We are going to Majorca tomorrow and have booked a taxi to take us from airport to our hotel, journey time 1 hour.
I emailed the taxi company requesting 2 high backed booster seats. They have replied saying they only gave low back booster seatsHmm
I have a 6 year old & a 4 year old-I know no backed booster seats are illegal in UK but should this 1hr each way journey be ok for them??
Will I request the Seat group before that for my 4 year old?
Thanks!

They're obviously legal if that's what they provide. But they're nowhere near as safe if you were to be involved in an accident. You need to risk assess and make that call.

Cherubfish · 16/07/2018 16:16

This is common for taxi companies IME.

dementedpixie · 16/07/2018 16:20

They arent illegal in the UK, what makes you think they are? You are lucky they have any as taxis are normally exempt from car seat laws

specialsubject · 16/07/2018 16:24

it is what it is and legal for Spain (and here too)

you could get a bus or coach if they run, statistically safer.

Polly2345 · 16/07/2018 16:26

In UK it is legal for them just to sit on your lap if it's a taxi.

TroubledLichen · 16/07/2018 16:27

They aren’t illegal in the UK, there are new restrictions on the sale of them but it’s perfectly legal to use them if you already own them. I expect they are also legal in Spain as I doubt the taxi company would you offer you something if they would be breaking the law. As for safety, I expect that the booster cushion will be far safer than using a harnessed seat if you child exceeds the specified height/weight. Personally I’d just use the boosters unless you want to take your 4YO’s seat from home.

ThomasNightingale · 16/07/2018 16:28

They’re not on sale any more in the UK for that age group but they’re not illegal to use.

Sadandpregnantlady2018 · 16/07/2018 16:28

Low back car seats are not illegal they are just advised that high back ones are safer.

Abkbjbjb · 16/07/2018 16:30

Sorry I'm clearly wrong then saying they are illegal in uk....
I wouldn't use one in my car put it that way for either age!
My query is should I ask for group before booster for the 4 year old

dementedpixie · 16/07/2018 16:33

It depends on her weight as those seats are weight based. If she is over the weight limit for the lower group seat then that wouldn't be suitable either.

ThomasNightingale · 16/07/2018 16:34

How heavy and tall is your 4 year old? That affects whether it would be reasonable to squeeze him into a lower age group seat.

dementedpixie · 16/07/2018 16:36

www.gov.uk/child-car-seats-the-rules gives the groups and weights for the seats

Mindchilder · 16/07/2018 16:41

I'd be happy to put children that age/over 15kg on a booster cushion in a taxi.

Abkbjbjb · 16/07/2018 17:00

He is 18.9 kg & 110cm tall

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 16/07/2018 17:03

He's heavy enough for a group 2 booster seat and just over the weight for a group 1 harnessed seat

TuckMyWin · 16/07/2018 17:04

Most harnessed seats only go up to 18kg. I'd be very surprised to find a taxi company using one that harnessed to 25kg, they're expensive. Your 4 year old will be safer on the booster cushion.

ShatnersBassoon · 16/07/2018 17:05

Get the bus from the airport instead. You're not happy with the option available, so don't take it.

Abkbjbjb · 16/07/2018 17:06

Think I will go for booster then

Bus not an option as plane lands at 1am....but thanks for your input

OP posts:
TuckMyWin · 16/07/2018 17:07

There won't be any booster seat available on the bus, and possibly no seat belt either!

lavenderlove · 16/07/2018 19:11

Hi I went to the airport in a taxi with my 5 year old son a few weeks ago. I used his own car seat in the taxi and then they took it to their taxi office with a ticket on it so I could pick it up after my holiday. Didn't even think to ask them to provide a car seat to be honest! So that might be an idea x
