Age RF on graco milestone? And when to remove cabriofix newborn insert?

My baby’s in a maxi cosi cabriofix car seat now and he’s 3 months today. In order for his head to be straight and inside the head huggy bit the wedge for his bum isn’t flush to the bottom anymore, he looks so uncomfortable and hates being in it! When can it come out?
Also we bought the Graco Milestone in the sales before he was born and I can’t seem to find an average age it rear faces to? Any help would be hugely appreciated

What does the Maxi Cosi manual say about the head bit?

The milestone only rear faces to 13kg so the same as your Maxi Cosi. It's not a good choice for rear facing unfortunately.

I put the manual down and lost it, the website isn’t working for me. I was worried about that with the milestone, I don’t really want it now if I’m honest

I'd take the newborn insert out now if it doesn't fit well anymore.

13kg will probably be about 2ish, 18 months if he's chunky.

Can you take it back? You'd be much safer using the Cabriofix to 13kg (it's a big seat so it will last) and then moving to a proper rear facing seat.

I would guess that you can take the newborn insert out under his bum but leave the head hugger in if that works? They do tend to go through a fussy phase with car seats IME but hopefully he'll grow out of it soon when he can actually play with a toy.

A baby seat is unlikely to last to 13kg - a 2 year old will have outgrown a baby seat long before they reach the weight limit.

How long do you intend to rear face for?

Take the newborn insert out now if you want.

My 17 month old is still in his cabriofix but I reckon it’s only got about another 6 weeks left in it!

A Cabriofix will easily fit an 18month, they're huge. My DD still fit in one by height at 3 years (just to try) and she's 91st centile!

Best options for rear facing after an infant seat are the 25kg seats such as the Axkid Minikid and Britax Two Way Elite.

Sorry Pottering, I was replying to the PP. My 17mo still fits by height but is 12.7kg so nearly at the limit. He's been in a Minikid since about 12mo but I just like to test the baby seats!

Don’t worry about it; my 6 year old tried it the other day just to see. I was a bit scared he’d get wedged under the handle, but apart from that...

The other 2 were in the same cabriofix seat until at least 18 months. It’s a beast, I agree!

Take out the newborn insert when they need more space I think. Can’t understand these older children still fitting in the cabriofix, my two had their heads well over the top by around 15 months. Pretty sure my 2.2yo would look ridiculous in a cabriofix now at 90cm and 12kg, but it’s long gone so can’t check! Can’t even picture it so interested to see someone else’s 2yo fit in one!

Tfoot Not my photo but a 2.5yr old in a Cabriofix. A lot of people don't pull babies right down into the car seat so they sit higher than they should be and then it seems like the seat is outgrown earlier than it actually is.

Thank you for your help, I haven’t had baby weighed for a few weeks I’ll have to see this week. He’s always hated his car seat and pram I can’t go out anywhere without the sling. Weird because he’s always laughing and playing otherwise! Completely different subject (ish) but does anyone know if I can get a buggy insert to use the pushchair part of a wayfarer as he’s the length of the carrycot already!
We bought the Milestone in December so really doubt they’d take it back. I’d like to RF as long as I can but it’s all new to me as my other DS is 10 and just went FF much earlier than they say now.

Can you take the wedge bit out and leave the head hugger in? I seem to remember we took the wedge out around 3 months but kept the head hugger nearer 7 months.

You slide the foam out of the pocket at the bottom and use the head hugger like that.

I agree you're unlikely to get a refund this many months later. I did a similar thing when my DS was little - rush bought a seat I thought would be good and later regretted it! Never mind. I think in your situation, I'd use the Milestone when he outgrows or gets fed up in the Cabriofix until you get to 13kg. As it's a 0+/1 seat, at least it will be a bit bigger and more upright, which most toddlers prefer to the baby seats. Then you can reassess at that point what age he is, if you're happy to forward face or if you want to use the Milestone as a spare seat for grandparents/partner/childminder (etc) and get a new ERF seat.

Another option if the Milestone still has all tags on etc might be to try and sell it on a local selling site to recoup some of its value. Then replace with a low cost ERF seat like one of the Joie ones? (However, I'd defo wait until your DS outgrows his baby seat before buying the next one so that you have the benefit of choice of whichever seats are released between now and then.)

You can pull the foam wedge out of the bottom of the headhugger fabric with the cabriofix so you can use headhugger without wedge. Don't be like me and lose the wedge tho if you're planning another child

I couldn't find any guidance for when to remove wedge either. I took it out when dd started to look uncomfy. I think i thought it was ok as the shoulder straps weren't too high on her without the wedge. She was probably about 12w.
