Has anyone got one of these? It seems like a bargain for a car seat which can rear face to 18kg, is there a catch?

No, I don't have one, but I don't think there's a catch, although I see it has a Which 'don't buy' associated with it, although it seems that was for forward-facing use without isofix.
For a little more money you could look at the Joie Everystage which also rear faces until 18kg and then continues forward facing as a group 2 and 3 seat so you wouldn't need to buy another car seat. There are also the Joie Steadi and Joie Tilt which are super cheap (Tilt is around £60) and both rear face to 18kg like the varioguard.

Thanks for your reply moggle. I've actually gone ahead and bought it as I saw a deal on Groupon to get it for £100.

I saw the which report but I am planning to use it rear facing and with isofix so it didn't worry me.

I wanted the joie every stage but dp wanted isofix and seeing as he is the one who fits the car seat I couldn't really argue.
