Buying a car seat based on weight?

Hi,

I've narrowed down my choice of car seats to 2. One is 2.5kg and the other is 5kg. Will the weight of the car seat make a huge difference? I do prefer the 5kg one as it has extra useful features (i.e. in-car lie-flat) but because it's heavier it is putting me off slightly.

I'm pregnant for the first time that's why I am clueless...

For me, weight was a factor but so was pushchair compatibility. weight doesn't matter so much IMO if you can attach it to a pushchair and push it.

Have you looked at the safety ratings? That would be my deciding factor in such a close decision.

In car lie flat?! Which one is that? Sounds fascinating

I have a lie-flat car seat and it's very heavy so I never take it out of the car. However it is FANTASTIC and my babies have been very safe and comfy in it with none of the usual car seat worries on long journeys (we travel a lot). I've never, literally never, wished I could take it out of the car so it's really not an issue imo.

Get the lighter one! Providing the safety aspects are all the same/similar. My car seat is so heavy, I've had hip problems since giving birth and carrying it hasn't helped at all. When the baby gets bigger will be harder and harder to carry.

Get heavier one with lie flat feature and keep in the car.
Lie flat for any journeys over 30 mins really is keep for newborns as they can easily lose oxygen desaturation due to neck position in regular shaped car seats. Leave in the car

The kiddy evo lunafix is one of the only ones that fit in one car seat space, get high safety ratings and can be laid flat whilst driving. I would recommend looking at if you were considering another

Oh and babies really shouldn't be left more than 20-30 mins in a regular car seat. So if not driving is safer to lift them out and put in a sling or lie flat pram

Get the light one. It's my biggest regret. I couldn't even carry DS in his from about 3 months!

Carrying babies in car seats is bonkers. The shape is terrible for it.

I think the lie flat ones get poor safety reviews. Although I am willing to be corrected.

Poo - they are the old style ones that laid flat across two back seats. The newer style ones rate highly on which tests.

If you have lots of long car journeys to do, get the lie flat. My mum lives 250 miles away. Lie flat car seats didn't exist when my babies were babies, and stopping every 1.5 to 2 hours for a wriggle added a long time to the journey.

As I understand it the Stokke lie flat car seat is only to be used flat OUTSIDE the car. (This is what it says on their website description) You can't use it like that when driving along can you?

Ooh that Kiddy one does look good. I always worry when they are bent up in seats when they are so little. Glad there are more options now.

I had a "Jane Matix light" which was bloody awesome but it weighed a tonne. There's no way you could carry it round even with only a newborn in. But you easily get it onto the pram and just about managed to get it from the car to the house. I had a standard car seat with my second child and it was much lighter but I still didn't really carry a baby in it. They could be as light as a feather but they are still an awful shape to carry

I'm looking at getting the brand new kiddy evo. It is lie flat in-car. We regularly drive over 800 miles so stopping every 2 hours isn't an option!

This new car seat is only 5kg, so looks like it wins.
