Joie Tilt forwards facing

Looking for advise or experience please. DS is 2.7 approx 12kg and nearly 90cm. He currently RFs in his Cybex Sirona and will do for a good while longer. However we travel abroad a couple of times a year and have a 'spare' car seat, the Joie Tilt which we take with us because it is smaller and easier to transport. Upto now we've been using the Tilt RF and been very happy and as DS has got bigger (even though small for his age) he is becoming less comfortable in it. It now depends on the car, I've always managed to fit the seat safely (sometimes in the middle seat due to buckle crunch but always somewhere) but the amount of spare available for him to sit in depends on the design/recline of the back seats. Sometimes it's still fine - he is perfectly comfortable in it RF in my mums car for instance. However some cars seem to leave him with less space, our most recent trip we rented a car which although the seat fitted safely it was really hard to get him into it and tighten the belt because there was so little space and he moaned that he was really uncomfortable.

Anyway sorry for the essay - for some reason I feel I have to justify turning him Ff in it! What I want to know is does anyone know how safe the Tilt is FF. I feel like I've heard bad things about it for FF only but can't remember?

I don't want to use hire seats abroad - I don't trust them. I can't afford to buy a bigger RF seat (and the Sirona is doing us good service at home) and I don't really want to buy a FF seat just for abroad but I will consider doing do it the Tilt is particularly terrible FF? Help!
