At what age did you stop using a child seat?

DS1 is nearly 8 and still in a high backed booster. He's 7cm off 135cm and I would say his friends tend to be a similar height.

Now when I've collected his friends they have all commented on the seats. I get the impression that most of them don't use them anymore. They say their little brothers and sisters do so its not families who totally ignore the law. I was just wondering how many people actually stick to the rules properly?

My 9 year old still in one. car seat belts are designed for people over 150cm In germany and Ireland the law is 150. I keep her it as it more comfy when traveling, I dont stress in other peoples cars now unless they are taking her far.

My dd is 8 and is 138cm, she asked to retain her booster seat because it puts the seat belt in a more comfortable position for her. It's rare that we wouldn't use the booster seat.

My dd was 10 when she went on to a cushion type booster seat.

My son is 9 and 140cm tall. He sits on a high backed booster. I know that technically he doesn't need a seat any more, but I think that 150cm tall is a more realistic guide to when they will be ok sitting without a booster.

When my son sits in a car (any car, not just ours) the seatbelt is, in my opinion, still too high over his abdomen and too close to his neck if he's not in a car seat. I don't object to him sitting on a backless booster now for short journeys, but still prefer one with a back on, especially for longer journeys. I asked him if he was still comfortable in one (we have 2 Britax Adventures and a Britax KidFix) and he said he was.

A lot of his friends stopped using high backed boosters when they started school and but I think most of them still use a backless booster (DS is one of the oldest in his school year, and tall for his age, so I'd guess most of his friends have only just reached 135cm if at all).

Dc3 (8) is about 135cm and has a high back in our 'big car' for long journeys and a booster seat in my little car as if I have all 4dc in, it has to go in the boot to fit 3dc in the back (dc4 is still in an isofit high back).

My son is 9 and still in a high back booster, he will stay in it till he's above the top.

He's tall toO. They offer much better side impact protection

LemonBreeland · 02/02/2015 22:49

DS1 was about 9 when he stopped using his car seat. DS2 is 7 and still has a high backed booster. Lots of his friends don't have a high back though.

I don't feel strongly about the 150cm thing, as I am only 160cm myself.

FATEdestiny · 02/02/2015 22:52

There is a height chart in Halfords for when a child doesn't officially need a car seat anymore. I can't remember the height - 135cm I think?

DD and DS were about 9 years old when they stopped using their car seats altogether because they were tall enough.

sanfairyanne · 02/02/2015 22:52

9 or 10, probably 10
my kids were one of the oldest but i was ok with that

MissWimpyDimple · 06/02/2015 20:38

8yo DD is still in an HBB in my car but I don't stress about it in other peoples cars unless it's longer journeys. She'll stay in the HBB for a while yet, I'll only take the back off if she gets too tall.
