When I had dd, you weren't allowed to carry baby out unless in a car seat. I just borrowed one for the home journey. Ours stayed in the car too. Best thing we did, because we weren't buying again months later. We have the Britax first class plus.

There is no uniform policy. You'll have to ask at your hospital. But as it's not compulsory to take your baby home by car, they cannot insist you have a car seat even if they make sweeping statements about the requirement.

We used an in car one and it wasn't a problem but it was a decade ago. The midwife just followed us out and made sure all was safe with the seat.

Tell them you are getting a bus.

they can't force you to carry baby out in a car seat. they can have any "policy" they like, but ultimately it's your baby and you are allowed to take it home regardless of what they say!

I carried all mine out, don't see how they could actually stop you

LemonBreeland · 31/05/2014 19:51

If they are that bothered on checking the car seat they can come down with you. I don't think they can really physically stop you from leaving.

Yes, like others have said, it varies. I always used a Britax First Class from birth, so all three of my babies were carried from the hospital in my arms (DD2 from the labour ward, she was my third so no need to transfer up to the ward, I just went straight home). This was in Sheffield, I wasn't even accompanied to the car they just let me go.

Over 3dcs and 2 very different hospitals car seats were never mentioned, the only thing I got told off for was waiting by the door for my lift to turn up Hmm. Car seats never mentioned and lots of people walk home from here.

When I had my dd we were escorted out of the hospital to our car, by the time ds was born 3 years later I just had to give them a little wave in my way past the nurses station on my way out. They didn't check about a car seat or anything.

When I had mine I'm not even sure they knew I'd gone -discharged me at the bed and then left us to it
