Car seat confusion!

My son is 5m, he is a big lad- currently weighs 18lb. I am already on the longest setting for the straps on his car seat!! I can no longer put him in the seat and do it up if he is wearing more then a baby grow!! Is this normal? Plus his feet are touching the back of the seat it's fixed too, he has to keep his legs a little bent. Surely he is too young to have to move up a seat?

We have a mother care "curve" travel system, this car seat came with it. I pretty sure it's the second category. ( is that 1?)

Thanks for your help. Xxx

I could be wrong but I think the min age to be forward facing is 9 months plus be of a min weight too which I believe is either 20 or 22lb.

You can aparently get rear facing seats with extra leg room.

My ds is 11 months and is quite long but I don't think he is heavy enough forward facing. He looks too small and uncomfortable in that position.

Someone will come along soon with better advice on the age/weight laws.

I wouldn't put a child forward facing until at least 4 years old. Google rear facing the way forward. Lots of information and advice here.

Kiddicare has lots of birth to 4 seats on offer starting at £45 half price that can be fixed rear facing.

Ds was the same we had to buy a 0+/1 seat that you could have rear facing til 9 months and then forward facing til 4 (although ds out grew it not long before he was 3)

Thank you all for your advise. Took the seat to mothercare today, the last removed a piece of polystyrene form underneath which I didn't even know about! This has ment the he is lower in the seat, so have now gained an extra 1/2 inch of belt!! So it should last a couple more months.

Hi

I had a similar problem when my lil boy was 5months he was 20lb and very squashed in his baby carseat. I bought a britax first class which had more room in it for him but still faced backwards. He's now 2 yrs 5 months and has just grown out of it. In car safety centre are really good at advising you over the phone, I used them over weekend as I know don't really trust halfords after advising us on a carseat a month ago that put my son in danger.
