Mamas and Papas Cybex Sirona Extended Rearfacing...

DS is only 7 months, so we're not ready for the next seat yet, but we have started looking into it.

We have the Maxi-Cosi Cabriofix at the moment, with the family fix base. We originally intended to buy the Pearl, but that was before I'd heard of extended rear-facing.

We were probably going to go for the BeSafe iZi, which is usually around £350, butI received an email from M&P today about their new Cybex Sirona. It's £400, but swivels on the base for ease of babies/toddlers getting in an out.

Has anyone got any thoughts on this? Is the swivel feature worth the extra £50?

Ooch! I didn't realise it was £400! To be honest, I'm not sure the swivel would be worth it... I think a lot of people say they find rear- facers easy to load. I'm interested in this seat as we have very few options with our car combination and this looks like it could fit the bill perfectly. If your dc is only 7 months old then hopefully you've got time to wait until the price comes down!

The Cybex Sirona looks like a great seat but there is one reservation I have with it, the harness slot is not as high as other group 1 car seats so I cannot see how on earth a child aged 4 years could sit in the seat. Besafe have published a PDF with the comparisions on and claim the top harness slot is 9cm lower than the Besafe iZi Combi !!! and they believe a child will outgrow the seat by age 2 ...

Have a look at the axkid. Having seen all except the Sirona I am so pleased we have chosen this one.

That's interesting to know. DS is 8 months and the cabriofix straps are too short, he has to have just a sleepsuit on as cardigans make it impossible to close. It's supposed to be until 12mo so I'm loath to buy the Sirona if its only really going to fit for another year or so.

I saw it in the flesh last weekend, it's very small. I think we'll go for the be-safe ezi.

Just bear in mind that some people have reported outgrowing the besafes at 2.5yrs

I have a cybex sirona for my 14 month old and it's amazing!!!!! The swivel function makes it so easy to get DD in and out. Another poster mentioned about the harness slots being low but it is fully adjustable, you press a button under the headrest and the headrest and straps all move up as one so there is no fiddly re-threading of the straps when you need to adjust and you can get it in precisely the right position for your DC.

When we purchased this seat we knew we wanted ERF for the increased safety. Originally we planned to buy the Britax one (I forget what it's called) but it wasn't compatible with our car so we brought the cybex instead. Yes it is more expensive but for us as we were looking in that sort of price range the extra £50 was fine.

I would highly recommend this seat to everyone. You can also buy an insert (not included) to make it suitable from birth.

I have 4 cybex sirona seats for 4 of my DC they're great best car seats I've bought IMO. DS1 is 5.5yo and has only just recently moved out of his Sirona (due to one of preemie twins coming home and reaching the weight limit). We've bought him a Cybex Pallas. It's great.

I'm a new mum2b, and at 33 weeks feeling stressed that i don't have a car seat yet. Strongly considering the Cybex Sirona, in fact had decided to buy it until a friend with 2 kids said it can't be taken out of the car and fixed to a pram. I have a carry cot on my pram and want to get the most out of it for the first 6 months. Other car seat contender is the Cybex Aton Q, which does fit onto the Pram but only goes up to 18 months, whereas Sirona goes up to 4 years (or there abouts).
So the question; if car seat cannot fix onto pram, is this a good enough reason not to purchase, considering i have carry cot? How important/useful is it to be able to attach car seat to pram?

Not important at all to be able to put a car seat on a pram, especially if it is your first baby. By the time I was on baby no.3 I did borrow an infant carrier from a friend that would fit on my pram wheels, but even then did not use it on a regular basis like that (just the odd occasion if I was doing the school run in the car, or going to Next on a retail park to pick up an order I'd had delivered there).

It's definitely better to put the baby in a carrycot, and I think it's better to get them used to being moved while asleep. I could always get my toddlers out of the car and into a pram/their cot asleep without them waking, and I think this is because I always left the infant car seat in the car (I had a Britax First Class seat that stays in the car).

And I would definitely go for a seat that can stay rear facing right up to 18kgs, like the Sirona can. It's much safer for children right up to the age of 4 years to travel rear facing in the car. All the research proves this, yet the information being given out by high street retailers and most health professionals does not reflect this. Read www.rearfacing.co.uk and do your own research about car seats, do not rely on Halfords/Mothercare/Mamas and Papas to give you any sensible advice!

I agree with the above on pretty much all points, not being able to put it on the pram not a big deal at all. If I was starting again I would definitely get a 0+/1 erf seat as oppose to an infant carrier.

My only additional comment is the transfer from car to carrycot/pushchair thing.. I did this with all 3 of mine and not one ever managed the remaining asleep so I would be less likely to attribute sleeping through this type of transfer as a training thing. For some children it might be but not for mine,

I know im a little late to the party but i thought my advice might be valid as i have a daughter who is a few months old. We initially bought a car seat and pram separately with the intention of using the each exclusively. However, When taking my daughter out of the car seat and in to the pram it was a headache as she was often sleeping (as the all do at that age) and more often then not we would wake her up. Couple that with the faf of getting her out of the car seat and in to the pram in the middle of a car park and you can kind of see the advantage of the car seat and pram combo.

We got the car seat adaptor specific to the pram from the retailer and its a matter of taking the car seat out and plugging it in to the car pram. We managed 2 weeks without the adaptors and now i couldnt manage without.

Yes, worth every penny! Dd moved in to this at about 9 months when she had outgrown her Strata, it is a fab bit of kit and the swivel function really does make a difference.
My 5yr old very lanky dn fits in it (facing forward her legs are too long for rf) and declared it very comfy. The pad for ff is really well thought out, easy to use and is the best compromise when legs get too long for for rf or in 20 month dd's case when they work out how to escape a 5 point harness mini houdini with a death wish

Pickles14, is your DD forward facing in it at 20 months? DS is 22 months and tall for his age. Put him FF his morning in Cybex with cushion and he looks really uncomfortable, his arms are pushed upwards, doesn't look safe!

Has anyone who bought the Sirona from birth needed to purchase a separate Newborn inlay for this product?
Also i was thinking of getting a baby carrier or sling for those odd occasions when i need to nip to the shops with baby, would that work as an alternative to always putting baby in and out of Sirona and into Carry cot/pram?

We brought the cybex a out 6 weeks ago and it was the best £375 I've ever spent, it's a wonderful car seat, the swivel feature is a god send! Well for the extra money xx

Love hearing the fab reviews from sirona owners. We got an absolute bargain on one from kiddicare (it was the sirona plus and a demonstration one so they sold it to us for £216!). We've yet to start using it though as we're adopting and waiting for little one to come home. Can't wait to start using it though as have been massively impressed by the quality and also fed up of seeing it sitting in the nursery!
