Moving from group 1

When do you move from a group 1 car seat?

We have a Maxi Cosi Priori Fix seat in our second car, and my ds's head is a couple of centermeters over the top. In the same car we have a Maxi Cosi Ferofix Group 2,3. So I tried my son in that. As he is 25months it was a bloody disaster - yes he would have been protected if he'd read the instruction book & kept sitting nicely, but the freedom of the seatbelt, meant he devised a new game to see how far he could lean over in different directions. He might as well have not been in anything.

We have a rearfacing besafe duo thing in our main car, but the other (tiny) car is occasionally used to pick up son & his cousin. What should I do - I'm damned if I'm buying yet another car seat as that's nearly a grand we've spent in 2years including his baby car seat!! He's 16kg, 96-98cm tall (keeps going on tip toes so hard to be accurate)

Keep him in the current 5-point harness seat until he is 18kg and the tops of his ears and his eyeline is level with the top of the carseat.
