Is there a time limit on car seats?

Just a quick query, I'm expecting 2nd child and ds is now 8. We still have his old 0+ car seat which has been well looked after and never in a crash etc. But is there a recommended time limit on car seats? I read something about plastic degeneration but I don't know much about it and the effects on the seat. For the sake of a few £'s I don't want to take unnecessary risks.

Yes, the plastic can degrade, and also the regulations have changed slightly in the last 6-7 years (my eldest is nearly 7 and they changed after him). Newer infant carriers have greater side impact protection.

In your position I'd buy a new seat.

Thanks for the information I think a new seat will be called for. I have to say the life span issue is not widely publicised and maybe more should be dove to make people aware.
