Kiddy car seats - do dc climb out?

I'm thinking of getting a kiddy seat for dc3 but I can't see what stops the dc from climbing out. We already have a maxi cosi priori so i don't want to waste my money if 'Houdini' will escape. Dc1 and 2 could both escape from the priori.

What's to stop them escaping?

I found simply carrying out the threat that "if you climb out we'll just turn the car round and you won't get your trip to the park" worked quite well.

That along with "the policeman will be really really cross with you", and "do that again and you're back in the baby seat". I think DS stayed put after that.

Plus the incentive that if he's good, he gets to push the magic red button once the engine's switched off.

We have a kiddy car seat. We had one occasion in 9 months when DD was on meltdown and managed to push the cushion thing up and slip under it . Luckily I was somewhere I could pull over and wrestle put her back in the seat. Think I perhaps hadn't tightened the seatbelt enough and that's how she managed it. Apart from that we like it though.

I have been looking at something called Five Point Plus. It looks quite good and covers the bit where they get their arms out. Haven't got round to buying one yet though so can't recommend it as such but it does look good.

I also use the Policeman will tell you off!

Is the cushion thing just held down by the car seatbelt? Why can't the dc just push it up and climb out?

I think they get used to the general idea of being strapped in from birth, so settle into staying put, after a spot of testing the boundaries first.

And yes the cushion is just held in place with the seatbelt - their car protection is the seatbelt itself, the cushion (and backrest bit with it) just stop the belt cutting into the wrong places (kid's neck and stomach) in a crash.

I don't think I'll get one then since dc3 seems to have even more houdini in her than dc1 and 2. We'll stick with the maxi cosi.
