Car seat advice weight or age?

Hello there

I'm new to Mumsnet so nice to be here and hope to get some advice

I have been given a 1-2 car seat & the recommdation is for a child from 15kgs/4 yrs old. My question is does the child have to be 15kgs or 4 yrs old or is it which ever comes first. My son is 3 but is 15kgs + so is it OK to use the chair even though he isn't 4 yet & what happens if a child is 4 but not yet 15kgs does that mean that they can't use the chair?

Thanks

You might like to look at this WHICH review of child car seats. It says weight is more important than age.

If you navigate round the site, you can find information on best buys, seats they recommend to avoid and a lot of safety information.

carseats are safety tested on weight.
so long as he is 15kg,he can legally use the seat, however it is MUCH safer for him to be in a 5 point harnessed seat until he is 18kgs(which is usually the limit on group 1 seats)

Thanks for the advice, couldn't get the WHICH best/worst buys without signing up but the video and information on the link was quite thought provoking. Think I will be keeping him where he is in his 5 point seat until 18kgs as suggessted.
