is the middle seat safe?

May be a really stupid question but is it safe to put a rear facing car seat in the middle seat of the back of the car? (It's a saloon type car and there is no leg room in the middle seat so it would solve a lot of space problems)

The middle seat has a normal seatbelt, not just a lap belt.
