Car seat for giant two year old!

My ds is two and a bit, weighs just over 19kgs and is around 96 cms tall. He is currently in five point harness car seat, am concerned that he is too heavy for it, but can he be in the next stage seat? He is the right weight for group 2/3, but does his age make any difference? And any ideas of good seats gratefully received!

my ds is 2 and not sure what weight he is now but was 17kgs before he was 2! we have the britax two way elite for him as it goes to 25kgs harnessed. he may be the right weight but not sure i'd trust/want ds in a seatbelt!

Glad am not only one with big boy Thanks for that, good point re seat belt; ds is quite, ahem, adventurous..I shall look that one up directly.

Yes - I would recommend a Britax Two Way Elite also. The ladies at the Essex in Car Safety Centre told me that this was a great seat for a larger toddler. I bought two so I could rear-face my twins as long as possible and so this seat has the advantage that you can rear-face it if you wish.

o ,no, it looks like thsy've stopped making it? Can't find one anywhere, except secondhand on ebay

Hi again
The Britax Two Way Elite is only available from the Milton Keynes In Car Safety Centre. You can try it out in Milton Keynes or at the Essex In Car SAfety Centre (or, if you are anywhere near Brighton, you can come and see mine!)

makeupmummy · 14/07/2010 13:56

Thank you - sadly am in sticks in south scotland, nowhere nearby at all. will keep looking!

makeupmummy, you can order online form the in car safety centre and there are people in scotland that have the two way elite. not sure where abouts they are but they are willing to let people see it apparently?

nicm · 14/07/2010 14:08

have just looked on rf website, one says they are in inverness so maybe a wee bit far for you but there is someone else in scotland but they don't say where...

Am having a memory block and cant remember what seat we have but ds has been in a high back booster from 2y3m. He was too tall and too heavy for any of the harnessed seats (apart from the special needs ones which are about £500).

5 point harness seats ARE safer than seatbelted ones. End of.

However, if your child is over the weight limit the harness may not hold them anyways in the event of a crash (God forbid)

The Britax regent supports kids up to 80lbs in a 5 way harness. However, Ive never found anywhere that stocks it over here. It may be worth contacting Britax direct though

is very upsetting (loss of a child) but I wish Id bought it before buying a high back booster tbh

FWIW ds has always been ok (touch wood) in his high back booster. I hope I havent confused you even more!!

Most Group 1 seats go up to 18kg, so you really need to find a new seat for him ASAP. Yes I believe the age guideline is just basically "Can you trust him not to undo the seatbelt yet?" which at 2 is unlikely, because he won't understand.

You will probably find a seat with a 5-point harness if you search for special needs carseats. I'm not sure how many of the rearfacing seats can be used to 25kg, but that could be an option to look into as well if you can buy online (though check the returns policy in case it doesn't fit in your car)

Waitingforbedtime, your link doesn't work.

waitingforbedtime · 14/07/2010 14:14

Hope this works - its by a family who lost a child so is very very sensitive, however it highlights the importance of a 5 point harness, which I wish Id known, that said, I find it impossible to actually FIND one over here for kids over 40lbs.

makeupmummy · 14/07/2010 18:52

Thanks all, I actually weighed him yesterday as suspected may be too big 5 point on mine. Am going up to Inverness, as it happens, so can look then! Thanks again

makeupmummy if you go on to www.rearfacing.co.uk and then contact the person from inverness they may meet up with you to show you the seat.
