What can I expect from my first appointment to the breast clinic?

A few days ago I noticed a tiny, minuscule dimple on the side of my left breast. I couldn’t be sure if it was a stretch mark I’d never noticed, or if it was something else. So I made an appointment at the GP and saw the nurse practitioner, she had a good feel and she actually found a lump on the right side of my right breast and made an urgent referral to the breast clinic to be seen within the next 2 weeks.

She’s as confident as she can be that it’s not cancer, but because of my mum, we agreed it’s better to err on the side of caution so I’m being seen asap. I should have heard from them by Tuesday.

What can I expect from the appointment? She said they’ll do a scan and possibly a biopsy. I’m trying not to be too concerned because logically I know the chances of it being cancer are incredibly slim, but still… 😬 Will a biopsy hurt? How big is the needle? I’m not sure if I should ask my husband to take a day off to take me, Will I be too sore to drive if I do have to have a biopsy?

All clear! The doctor couldn’t feel anything that the nurse had felt and the sonographer couldn’t see anything on the ultrasound either, so she sent me on my way. We were there for an hour and a half in total. I’m SO relieved!

Mine was: mammogram, discussion with doctor, ultrasound, back to doctor, fine needle aspiration (no local anaesthetic so very painful), results after 2 days. Was at the hospital about 3 hours, seeing one person after another. Couldn't fault it

I think it’s important to remember that this could be one of a number of things which are more common than breast cancer. I know my words won’t reassure you any more than they would have reassured me when l got a call back from a mammogram.

Sorry @Girliefriendlikespuppies - i mistakenly hit post before l’d finished. Just wanted to say that l understand how you must be feeling but try not to panic. Statistically only around 10% of new breast lumps are cancerous, so hopefully you will be one of the fortunate 90% who are diagnosed with one of the many possibilities other than breast cancer. Sending you a handhold and maybe you could come back after your appointment and let us know how you got on.💐

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 25/10/2025 16:59

Thanks I know, I’m actually not too worried because it seems unfathomable that it could be cancer but then every now and then I get a sort of sinking feeling of but what if…

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 29/10/2025 16:58

Had my appointment today, just a cyst! Very relieved, the appointment was seamless and everyone was very nice.

Can I just ask, did the sonographer say you could leave? I had an appointment today and they said I had a cyst and could go home, I didn’t get to speak to doctor again and now wondering if I was supposed to wait

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 25/11/2025 23:20

Hi @Carrie0104they offered to drain the cyst which I declined and then told me I could go.

Carrie0104 · 25/11/2025 23:23

Hey, thank you for your reply this whole ordeal has caused me so much anxiety! I saw doctor today who did an examination then went for ultrasound and the man who did the ultrasound sound said just a cyst and I could go, I’m worried incase I was supposed to wait to see doctor again?
