OK, used to live in Devon and we will be staying in Devon at friends for a wek and half so want to be much further into cornwall.

Requirements are as follows

Not sillily expensive

Walking distance to beach (appreciate these may cost more)

Not all singing all dancing - not into play parks and extra "facilities" just clean (and lenty) of toilets/showers will do really.

If anyone has been to Breck Farm in Norfolk - then we want that but in Cornwall!

Any suggestions more than welcome thank you!

as always, you cold do worse than a camping and caravanning club site -

here

they tend to do nice, well-managed sites without bels & whistles

maxybrown · 24/06/2010 20:05

ok, please excuse my complete ignorance, am still learning - do we need to join something to book these? (happy to do so just wanted to check)

Here is quite nice, basic, but nice area

Lastyearsmodel · 24/06/2010 20:08

Google Gwithian Farm - walk over dunes to beach, the best shower block I've known on a campsite inc. family bathroom, small shop on site, ping pong table, goats and guinea pigs are sum total of the play facilities. Owners v friendly, gets a bit busy with surf dudes at weekends, excellent fish and chip van on a Tuesday.

maxybrown · 24/06/2010 20:22

JaM that looks perfect thank you! Can't see a way to book so will ring up tomorrow. Have you stayed there?

Lastyear just about to look at your suggestion thank you!

maxybrown · 24/06/2010 20:23

ah have just seen you can't book, hmmmm. Bit of a pain as don't really fancy an 8 hour drive to find we can't get in

OP posts:
JaMmRocks · 24/06/2010 21:18

When are you going? We didn't struggle too much when we went last year.

JaMmRocks · 24/06/2010 21:19

Would recommend Gwithian as an area, it's v close to where we live so can vouch for it

maxybrown · 24/06/2010 21:52

Well DH finishes work 23rd July, going to Devon on 8th August. Want to have few days at home (probably though not essential) but want to ttime it with Devon really and looking at about a week ish of camping - depnding on prices really. That site really does look like the best for what we want!

Gwithian Farm is booked anyway and a tad too expensive for us, a bit too singing and dancing!

I think we will have to keep fingers crossed then that we can get in to Treen!

Just found one that worked out at £45 a night for me, DH and 2 year old - eeek!! And that was without hook up (not that we need it but even so)

A warning re Treen. We wanted that site and I rang but they won't budge at all re booking. Apparently you need to be in a village carpark at 8.30am to find out if you're one of the lucky ones to get in.

They wouldn't even elaborate on likelyhood.

If it's August you want I'd say you wouldn't have a cat in hells chance.

MilaMae · 24/06/2010 22:18

We're in Devon and are going to Cornwall the 1st and last week of the hols as got warned it'll be heaving in the middle. Several site owners advised us to go early or later as the 1st 2 weeks in Aug are always the worst.

If it was me I'd go the 1st day you can as a lot of people won't be organised enough to get away that week.

EnglandAllenPoe · 24/06/2010 22:19

Camping & caravanning - have a mix of members only and non-members welcome sites though it is usually worth joining if you plan to stay a week or more...(£33 per year? sth like that)

maxybrown · 24/06/2010 22:37

Hmm, school Hols vary so much though, my sisters kids and her school finish a week before DH so even if we went first week, it might easily be 2nd week for a lot of schools not looking good then.....no way we can be in a car park for 8.30. We travelled through th night last time and almost fell asleep so def not doing that again.

Milamae when do you break up for summer?

OP posts:
maxybrown · 24/06/2010 22:40

Oh and we can't go to friends place before the 8th August so need to try and time it......hmmm, bum

Anyone got a big garden in cornwall?

OP posts:
MilaMae · 24/06/2010 22:43

We break up on the 21st ,going to Cornwall on the 22nd.The Gwithians lady said it would be a lot quieter then, would be rammed at the end of the the following week.

People don't like the last week either as getting ready for school and it's darker. We'll be getting back on the Sunday of the bank holiday, not ideal but I'd rather do that.

We're also doing Sunday to Sunday on that last week to avoid the hideous Sat change over.

MilaMae · 24/06/2010 22:44

I thought stuff the 8.30 thing, imagine if they were full!!!!!!!

MilaMae · 24/06/2010 22:44

Having said that we have friends who never book and get in somewhere every year, they make a list and just keep on until someone lets them in

maxybrown · 24/06/2010 22:46

Hmm, DH finishes 23rd so soonest would be 24th (sat yuk) but wonder if we went then would we get in for 2 weeks? But couldn't afford Gwithians def not. Aaaaaaargh!

OP posts:
MilaMae · 24/06/2010 22:51

Gwithians is full the whole of Aug. You'll be in Devon so you'll have a slight advantage ie you could be down there before most people further up country. Have you got a list/guide books. Try googling and ringing round.I'm sure there must be some small farm ones somewhere.

maxybrown · 24/06/2010 22:55

We want to go before the 8th really, so that we go down to cornwall (coming from Manchester - why did I ever leave in the first place I ask myself??) first, be all mucky whatever, then stay at friends where we have easy washing machine access then go home from there.

Hopefully someone might know of other places. I did find another farm, but no website or anything so may try ringing there - Bodleigh Farm or something I think

OP posts:
maxybrown · 24/06/2010 23:16
